The Down Syndrome Resource Group of Western Massachusetts: Discover and Embrace the Potential

Back in 1999 a group of parents of children with Down syndrome came together to provide support and share experiences as they traveled a similar (and to most, unfamiliar) path. Their goal was simple but powerful: to inform and support other parents, the wider community, and professionals about the real lives and potential of people with Down syndrome.

The group became known as The Down Syndrome Resource Group of Western Massachusetts (DSRG) and that original spirit of connection continues to thrive today. In 2003, DSRG became part of Pathlight, and now ServiceNet, allowing the group to reach even more families across western Massachusetts.

Run entirely by volunteers, DSRG raises money to fund its multitude of programs and events. The Buddy Walk, held each October, remains the group’s major fundraiser and a joyful celebration of pride and inclusion.

That money raised goes right back into supporting families— reaching out to new parents through the First Call program, offering scholarships for learning and recreation, and even sending care packages when life gets tough.

The group holds monthly events, hosting a range of activities for people with Down syndrome of all ages. There are playgroups where parents of young ones get a chance to connect, dances where teens and adults can build on their own friendships, picnics for families, workshops, film showings, and more.

One of the highlights of the year is the World Down Syndrome Day Celebration, a lively dance held at the Castle of the Knights in Chicopee in March. There’s music, crafts, dinner, and a sense of pure joy that fills the room. In 2024, 244 people attended; in 2025 that number grew to 353.

And it’s not all fun and games. DSRG also provides scholarships for families to attend the annual Massachusetts Down Syndrome Congress (MDSC) Annual Conference in Boston. The conference is packed with sessions led by experts in education, medicine and more. There are also sessions for self-advocates where teens and adults can connect, play and learn.  This past year, DSRG supported 26 people in attending at no cost. Parents described the sessions as inspiring and useful, and the self-advocates came home full of stories and laughter.

And of course, the year wouldn’t be complete without the Buddy Walk, DSRG’s signature event and most visible expression of community pride. In 2025, over 400 people came out to the walk in Westfield to walk, dance, and connect. And raised $34,385 in the process.

From monthly meet-ups to major community celebrations, DSRG is built on one simple truth: families are stronger together.
