ServiceNet Reopens Pittsfield Warming Center for the Winter Season

As winter approaches, ServiceNet’s Shelter and Housing Division has reopened its warming center in the dining area of the First United Methodist Church in Pittsfield.

The warming center offers a safe place for individuals to escape the cold, warm up, and access snacks and hot beverages. It will be open seven days a week from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. throughout the winter season (November 17, 2025, through April 17, 2026).

Last winter, the center served just under 200 people, with an average of 23 guests per night. Individuals who utilized the space were experiencing homelessness and in need of stable housing. Rising rental costs in Pittsfield have made securing housing increasingly difficult. The Pearl, ServiceNet’s Pittsfield shelter, remains open but currently has a waitlist for any openings among its 40 beds. The warming center differs from the shelter as there are no beds.

Preparing winter shelter resources each year requires significant coordination.

“There are probably only a few months out of the year when I’m not talking about winter—I’m always planning for the next one,” said Erin Forbush, Senior Director of Shelter and Housing. “We are in this winter, and I’m already thinking about what’s going to happen next year. Winter shelter is never a given. It’s not included in the state budget or built into our own, so we’re always working to figure out where funding will come from and where we can safely operate.”

Staff at the warming center are currently seeking donations of adult winter coats and boots. Items can be dropped off in Pittsfield at the emergency shelter at 21 Pearl Street or at ServiceNet’s housing resource center at 141 North Street.

ServiceNet also operates a family shelter in Pittsfield, providing additional support for families experiencing homelessness.
