REACH Transitions to Battelle Developmental Inventory, 3rd Edition
REACH is now utilizing the Battelle Developmental Inventory, 3rd Edition (BDI-3) as its standardized assessment tool, replacing the previous version, BDI-2. The updated tool, which was rolled out on January 6th, provides a comprehensive evaluation of developmental milestones for children from birth to 7 years, 11 months.
“For some families, this year’s assessment may look a little different than the one they had last year,” said Robin Sudlow, REACH Co-Director. “But the BDI-3 is an excellent tool that will provide an even clearer picture of a child’s strengths and areas for growth. We’re excited about what this means for the families we support.”
The BDI-3 assesses five key developmental domains that include communication, social-emotional, adaptive, motor, and cognitive. Using a combination of structured items, interviews, and observations, the BDI-3 ensures a thorough and accurate assessment. This tool is essential for determining eligibility for early intervention services, as well as for developing Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSPs) and Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
At REACH, all children referred for Early Intervention services will be assessed using the BDI-3 upon referral and annually thereafter. This transition ensures consistency, accuracy, and a more comprehensive understanding of each child’s developmental progress.
