Meet & Greet with ServiceNet’s Carpentry Crew

Two men give the thumbs up as they sit in front of an unfinished bookshelf.ServiceNet’s carpentry crew recently finished up their most recent project, a brand-new bookshelf for the Hatfield Library, donated for the library’s annual Friends of the Library Book Sale.

The carpentry program is part of ServiceNet’s Prospect Meadow Farm, a therapeutic vocational farm program that supports individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The carpentry program was launched in 2024 thanks to funding from the Executive Office of Economic Development (EOED) Social Enterprise Capital Grant Program.

A diverse group of people haul a finished bookshelf on the back of a pickup truck.Since starting in May 2023, the carpentry program has contributed to numerous other community projects, including renovations to a goat shed at one of ServiceNet’s mental health recovery homes, picnic tables for the Holyoke Rows Organization in Holyoke, custom raised garden bed for ServiceNet’s Lawrence Plain group home, birdhouses to ServiceNet’s group home at The Hollows, custom crafted products such as bird and bat houses, which have also been donated to other Care Farms throughout the Northeast, and charcuterie boards for the Food Justice Alliance at Amherst College.

Carpentry Instructor Scott Craven leads the group, helping individuals learn valuable career skills. Craven has continued to foster relationships with the greater surrounding communities, giving participants opportunities to grow and gain professional experience.

Community members can meet the carpenters on Tuesday, September 2, at 10:30 a.m. at the Hatfield Library and learn more about the carpentry process while looking at the progress photos of the project.

Refreshments will also be available.
