For Emily Duryea, well-being isn’t just about mental or physical health—it’s about both. After earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in education—specializing in developmental disabilities and human services— Emily graduated from UMass Amherst in just three years. While Emily initially pursued a path in school psychology, a growing interest in fitness and injury prevention inspired a pivot toward a career that blends mental and physical wellness.

Emily’s commitment to helping others thrive is reflected in their certifications in Personal Training from the National Academy of Sports Medicine and Nutritional Coaching from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. Today, Emily brings this diverse expertise to ServiceNet’s Wellness Program, empowering clients to improve their overall well-being through personalized coaching and support.

Launched last year, ServiceNet’s Wellness Program offers free, participant-led exercise and nutrition coaching for individuals in ServiceNet’s mental health outpatient clinics in Northampton and Greenfield. For Emily, becoming a Health Mentor was a “stars aligned” moment—a role that merges their love for mental health and fitness while keeping her close to family.

“I always wanted to work in a field where I could help people improve their wellness. It’s a deeply rewarding job, and I really enjoy it,” Emily says.

The Wellness Program prioritizes client-led care, tailoring sessions to each individual’s needs. Participants take charge of their health by setting goals and finding methods that work best for them.

“‘Wellness’ is a broad term, but it reflects our participants’ varied goals,” Emily explains. “What we do is different for each person, but it’s always rooted in improving movement and nutrition. Sharing in their progress is a true joy.”

The program recently moved into a newly renovated space in downtown Northampton and will celebrate its grand opening on April 15 from 4–5:30 p.m. The new location offers expanded space for group classes and improved accessibility. Emily is excited to build a sense of community through group classes, coffee hours, and other gatherings, helping participants connect with others who share similar experiences.

“What’s most meaningful to me is making a difference in people’s lives,” she says. “Ultimately, change comes down to the participant, but being able to help guide and uplift them along the way is what makes this work so significant.”
