Moving Forward Programs

How is MOVE structured?
The MOVE program is a DPH Certified Batterer Intervention Program and runs for 40 weeks, for two hours per week and is facilitated by a male and female counselor. Our clients are 70% mandated by the courts or DCF and 30% voluntary men looking to improve their relationships. Often participants are hesitant to come to MOVE for fear of being labeled “an abuser.” Within weeks, group members feel accepted and supported and 50% of those who complete a Certified program do not have another physical incident. The culture of the group is one of respectful honesty. No one is ever shamed or blamed for their past behavior.

Intake Interview ($100): The first step for anyone entering the MOVE program is an interview with an Intake Clinician who talks with them about the following issues: relationships, parenting, substance abuse and mental health history. With the client’s consent, a brief report can be submitted as to the client’s appropriateness for referral to MOVE. This fee is non-refundable and can be mailed directly to the program along with the name, date of birth and name of the person referring you to the program.

Forty-Week MOVE Program: After the interview, clients choose which group to become a member, based on location and meeting time. Groups have approximately 12 members and are a combination of older and newer participants. Occasionally, Follow-up clients may attend a group and offer further perspective on the recovery process as they also receive on-going support to have healthy relationships. All group facilitators are certified by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. Weekly fee is based on verifiable income and is on a sliding scale ($25-$85) with community service available for those with documented need.

Follow-Up Program: Many clients choose to stay in the MOVE program once they’ve completed their 40-week basic group, recognizing that ongoing support is essential to remaining abuse free. When possible, clients can choose to come to their home group either bi-weekly or monthly for this on-going support. The fee is the same.

Partner Program: MOVE also offers support and information to people whose partners are enrolled in the program. All MOVE clients are required to provide contact info for the partner with whom the incident for which they are being referred, current partner, and any partner where there is shared custody of a child(ren). We reach out to each of those partners to offer support, referrals and information about the change process. The Partner’s Program is completely voluntary and free of charge.
